Things I learned about myself today:

1. When I get sick, my brain function drops like a normal person's. But my vocabulary actually picks up a syllable or two. My headaches are prohibitive; they don't get in the way. Glaucon was worried about retribution, not revenge. And so on.

(I had a head cold back in mid-December that never quite cleared all the way up. I now have a sinus infection. Still a little bit of congestion in the upper-chest, but the main thing is sinus headaches and sharp shooting pains every time I cough. I don't really feel that sick, though.)

2. Forget chicken soup. Miso soup is now my official go-to sick day food.

3. No matter how awkwardly the projector is positioned in my classroom, it really does make sense to use the Powerpoint presentation rather than writing all the important things up on the board. I thought I'd give a non-PP lecture a chance. It wasn't a total wash and probably would have worked better if I didn't have brain-fog due to congestion, but I don't think I ever really grasped how long it took to write out all those things by hand. It also lets me talk to the class rather than to the board as I'm writing.

4. Somewhere in my brain there is a synapse with the word "Augmentin" engraved into it. I hadn't thought about it since I took it off and on for about eight months (the year I had bronchitis that would not go away. The doc was going to put me on it, and I was able to pull that name out of thin air, without my conscious brain having much of a role. I may not know if I'm hypo/hyper-thyroidic, or who my insurance is through; but by God I know that drug didn't work!

5. My muses have a sense of humor, if nothing else. I mean, really? I've been trying to get my Pippin-muse to sit down for weeks now so I can tease out a story inspired by Oshun's Gildor biography. The semester has just started, I have my own research I'm behind on because of the headaches, and now he wants to get chatty? Dragging Gildor by the ears along with him no less. *head/desk*

Also, my Quark-muse - who I honestly did not know existed has been whispering sweet nothings in my ear about the true meaning of "freedom isn't free." I mean, I haven't written DS9-based stories since I was about fourteen, and even then I don't know I ever was drawn to Starfleet's favorite barkeep. *double head/desk*

6. New York may be a normal city to me, but it is apparently seen is one odd duck. Have been watching Mad About You and Seinfeld lately - which are truly chuckle-worthy (great!) but so off-the-wall. The New York I live in is pretty much like every other neighborhood. Then again, maybe I'm just so out there I don't notice the strange quirks.

Aside from still being a bit under the weather my days have mostly been teaching and getting ready to teach. We're doing books II and III of Plato's Republic this week which basically looks at the nature of justice. I have deep thoughts worth sharing beyond just my class (because, unlike Plato, I apparently think that everyone has a little philosopher waiting to burst free - whether they're studying philosophy or not). It's very interesting, but at the moment I'm too busy and worn out to do anything much with it.

Plus, you know, Pippin can be quite insistent and he's pretty much drowning out anything else along those lines. Maybe I'll get to it one of these days. :-)
